I've always found stitching on baseballs super beautiful in and of itself and also as it calls attention to the  construction of the skin of the ball from two pieces leather laid in opposite directions

early 19th century be my guess

with only pretty minor loss here and there

but this one struck me as quite lovely and nicely done

And the glow of his hand painted pink cheeks furthers a sense of some sort of possessed ness! Plus those wool shorts, and hand painted gold buttons running down the front of his dark shirt.
